The Folkestone Triennial art festival is on at the moment. By the harbour arm is the sculpture “Laure Prouvost, Above Front Tears, Oui Connect.” A three-headed bird with an electric plug on the end of its tail is perched on a concrete stump left over from the old ferry terminal. It is a surreal sight. Somehow, it begged for a picture that showed it isolated in minimalist form, just the bird perched in its habitat. I set up my phone on my tripod and made a 6 minute exposure using the Even Longer app (frame averaging mode), converting to monochrome in Lightroom, again on my phone.
BTW: the great thing about doing long exposures on the phone is that no-one bothers to come along and talk to you. Phones are normal, and, even on a tripod, easy to ignore. With a big camera and filters, I always attract the attention of passers by. I’m always happy to talk to people, but I can’t take photos with complex gear and settings, and talk at the same time. Using the phone requires nothing more than an app, with settings that are ultra simple. After a couple of years with it, Even Longer has turned into one of my favourite apps.
