I've just returned from a short tour to Lake Kerkini in Greece. The lake is famous for its colony of Dalmatian pelicans (Pelecanus crispus). At this time of the year, the adults have bright red pouches making them immediately recognisable.
I spent three days (two sessions per day) out on boats on the lake photographing the birds. I think it was one of the great wildlife experiences I've had. What goes along with that is that I've come back with an absurdly large number of images that will take me forever to get through.
For the moment, here is just one of my favourite images: an adult Dalmatian pelican skidding on the glassy surface of the lake on a windless day. In the background are snow-topped mountains that form the border between Greece and Bulgaria.
This is the first in a series of entries.
